Supplementary areasIt has to be stressed that the topics of this area are supplementary. It means that a water, a sanitation or a small-scale farming component will only be considered if it is of relevance to the health or education sectors. Water and sanitation Safe water supply forms a natural and important element of a health care or an education intervention. The priority will be given to the establishment of water supply that can be maintained locally at low costs. Activities, conditions and choice of technology in connection to the establishment of water supply must be coordinated with local authorities and other NGOs working in the area. DMCDD has prepared a special guide in accordance with Danida’s sector policy, where the involvement of the local users is a prerequisite. Also the maintenance of the water supply has to be financed and organized locally. As part of health care efforts, it may be relevant to build latrines and procure water supply to increase hygiene in practice and alleviate the women’s workload. As part of an education effort, it may be relevant to build latrines and obtain water supplies for schools. A financial contribution by the user will be needed for such projects. Small-scale farming If it is relevant to the main sectors, initiatives within small-scale farming may also be considered. The environmental crisis in many developing countries means that innovative initiatives that are ecologically and economically sustainable will have a high priority in order to improve the local food safety.
